GUIDELINES FOR PREPARATION OF COMPONENT DESIGN REPORT-NSSN ENGINEERED COMPONENT

Clause:

A. PURPOSE
THIS STANDARD PROVIDES GUIDELINES FOR THE PREPARATION OF A COMPONENT
DESIGN REPORT. THE GUIDELINES PROVIDED HEREIN SHALL BE FULLY
CONSIDERED BY THE VENDOR PRIOR TO AND DURING PREPARATION OF A DESIGN
REPORT. IF COMPLYING WITH THESE GUIDELINES RESULTS IN A CONFLICT WITH
REQUIREMENTS INVOKED BY THE APPLICABLE SPECIFICATION OR THE PURCHASE
ORDER, THE REQUIREMENTS CONTAINED IN THE SPECIFICATION OR PURCHASE
ORDER SHALL TAKE PRECEDENCE.

B. DEFINITION
DESIGN REPORT - A REPORT OF ANALYSES AND/OR EVALUATIONS WHICH
SUPPORTS/JUSTIFIES THE DESIGN OF A COMPONENT PRIOR TO
MANUFACTURE OF THE COMPONENT.

C. PREREQUISITE TO START OF REPORT
THE VENDOR AND PURCHASER SHALL AGREE ON THE SPECIFIC CONTENT OF THE
DESIGN REPORT, INCLUDING APPROACH AND ASSUMPTIONS, PRIOR TO COMMENCING
WORK ON THE REPORT.

D. GUIDELINES FOR REPORT PREPARATION
1. THE COVER PAGE SHOULD PRESENT THE FOLLOWING, AS A MINIMUM:
- TITLE OF THE DESIGN REPORT
- NAME OF THE COMPONENT AND MODEL NUMBER
- PURCHASE ORDER NUMBER AND LINE ITEM NUMBER OF THE PURCHASE ORDER
- PURCHASER CONTRACT NUMBER (TO BE PROVIDED BY THE PURCHASER)
- REPORT NUMBER
- REVISION LEVEL AND ISSUE DATE OF THE DESIGN REPORT
- NAMES AND TITLES OF VENDOR PERSONNEL WHO PREPARED, CHECKED AND
APPROVED THE REPORT

2. THE REPORT SHALL STATE THE PURPOSE OF THE REPORT, SIGNIFICANT
ASSUMPTIONS MADE, CALCULATION METHODS USED, AND CONCLUSIONS
REACHED. THE REPORT SHOULD CONTAIN THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS, AS A
MINIMUM.
- TITLE
- PURPOSE
- SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- CALCULATION METHODS USED
- ASSUMPTIONS, PARAMETERS AND NOMENCLATURE
- REFERENCES
- MATERIALS USED
- ALLOWABLE STRESSES AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES USED
- FORMULAS USED, INCLUDING UNITS
- INPUT VALUES
- RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS

3. THE INFORMATION PRESENTED SHOULD INCLUDE, BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO,
THE FOLLOWING:

A. MATERIALS - LIST SPECIFIC MATERIALS USED FOR THE COMPONENT/PART
BEING ANALYZED. THE MATERIAL LIST SHALL INCLUDE MATERIAL SPECI-
FICATION, TEMPER, TYPE, CLASS AND GRADE, AS APPLICABLE AND ANY
MODIFICATIONS THERETO.

B. ALLOWABLE STRESSES AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIALS -
IDENTIFY ALLOWABLE STRESSES USED AND THE SOURCE OF THE INFORMATION
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIALS USED SHALL BE CLEARLY
STATED, AND THE SOURCE DOCUMENTED AND REFERRED TO IN THE BODY OF
THE REPORT.

C. ASSUMPTIONS - LIST ALL ASSUMPTIONS MADE AND JUSTIFY THEM WITH
TECHNICAL RATIONALE. REFER TO SPECIFIC SOURCE OR PRESENT THE
JUDGMENT USED BASED ON ENGINEERING PRACTICE, EXPERIENCE, INDUSTRY
STANDARD, ETC., AS APPLICABLE.

D. REFERENCES - EACH REFERENCE SHALL BE CLEARLY PRESENTED BY TITLE,
AUTHOR'S NAME, PUBLISHER'S NAME, YEAR OF PUBLICATION, PAGE NUMBERS
ETC. REFERENCES USED SHOULD BE GENERALLY ACCEPTED IN THE
TECHNICAL AND/OR ACADEMIC COMMUNITY.

E. METHODS/PROCEDURES - METHODS/PROCEDURES USED SHALL BE BASED ON
SOUND ENGINEERING PRACTICE AND JUSTIFIABLE FROM A TECHNICAL STAND-
POINT. THE METHODS USED TO ARRIVE AT OR CONFIRM AN ENGINEERING
DECISION SHALL BE REVIEWED AND CHECKED BY COMPETENT TECHNICAL
PERSONNEL OTHER THAN THE ORIGINATOR.

F. INPUT VALUES, PARAMETERS AND NOMENCLATURE - THE REPORT SHALL
CLEARLY IDENTIFY THE INPUT VALUES, PARAMETERS AND NOMENCLATURE
USED IN THE DESIGN REPORT. UNITS OF MEASURE SHALL BE CONSISTENT
THROUGHOUT THE DOCUMENT. THE UNITS, INPUT VALUES OR PARAMETERS,
IF CALCULATED OR DERIVED, SHALL BE CLEARLY EXPLAINED.

G. DRAWINGS - INCLUDE DRAWINGS AND/OR SKETCHES NEEDED TO DEFINE
PORTIONS OF THE COMPONENT BEING EVALUATED.
4. IF THE ENGINEERING APPROACH REQUIRES THE USE OF PRIMARY SOURCE
DOCUMENTS SUCH AS ASME CODES, COMPUTER PROGRAMS, UNIQUE FORMULAS,
ETC., PERSONNEL WHO ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE ANALYTICAL METHODS
SHOULD BE EMPLOYED TO ACHIEVE PROPER EXECUTION, INCLUDING ACCURATE
DATA INPUT.

5. PREPARERS OF DESIGN REPORTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO CONTACT THE
PURCHASER WITH ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS WHICH ARISE DURING
DEVELOPMENT OF THE REPORT TO MINIMIZE UNNECESSARY ITERATIONS.
