Q&A with Dean Alvarado, Key Account Manager – Industrial Markets, RIX Industries

With decades of expertise in chemical engineering, hands-on involvement in industrial gas applications, and a passion for clean energy markets, Dean Alvarado brings a uniquely valuable lens to his role at RIX Industries. In this Inside RIX Q&A, he shares a journey that spans R&D labs, membrane-based gas separation, sales engineering, and now business development for emerging energy opportunities in hydrogen, landfill gas, and beyond.

Q: How did your career path lead you to RIX Industries?

A: I like to say I’m probably the lone chemical engineer at RIX surrounded by mechanical engineers. I graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in chemical engineering and started my career at SRI International, a nonprofit R&D organization originally spun out of Stanford. There, I worked on gas separation technologies, basically building systems that purify gases for downstream use.

After six years, it was clear that I would need a PhD to move up. I wasn’t ready to go back to school, so I transitioned into sales engineering at Membrane Technology & Research. I spent more than 15 years there, designing and selling gas recovery systems to petrochemical plants.

When I left, I dabbled in selling vibration mounts for a Japanese company, but that just wasn’t a fit. By then, I realized large-scale industrial technologies was the place for me. RIX checked every box: major equipment, compression systems, and applications tied to energy and gas markets. They hired me in 2018, and that led to the role I’m in today.

Q: How would you describe your role in a sentence or two?

A: I develop business opportunities for RIX’s oil-free reciprocating compressors used in industrial applications, everything from nitrogen and oxygen to hydrogen compression for clean energy. In short, I help customers find the right compression solutions, especially in markets that are still evolving.

Q: What aspects of your work give you the strongest sense of impact?

A: I think my impact is felt most in newer clean energy markets like hydrogen and landfill gas. Because of my background, my team often asks me to translate new ideas or technologies into something practical: Is this real? Can we support it? How does it work? That’s where I can help accelerate understanding, and eventually, opportunity.

Q: You’ve been closely involved in hydrogen projects. What makes that work meaningful to you?

A: We’re supplying compressors for hydrogen applications in Japan. Think refueling stations and sites that operate like “hydrogen hubs” producing hydrogen from solar power and distribute it via tube trailers to support regional use. The compressors aren’t new, but the impact is. We’re enabling clean transportation and supporting real-world hydrogen fuel ecosystems. That’s exciting.

Q: What technologies or markets are shifting the fastest right now?

A: Hydrogen has been through a reality check. For a while, there was huge enthusiasm around private hydrogen vehicles. Now the focus has shifted to heavy-duty trucking because the economics make more sense there. That’s where we’ll see the real proving ground. If hydrogen takes hold in trucking, the infrastructure will follow, and private vehicles may eventually come back into the conversation.

Landfill gas recovery is another rapidly evolving area. The technology exists today, but optimization is needed to make it more broadly attractive and economically sustainable. What I learned recently is that these systems aren’t run by landfill operators; they’re installed and operated by specialized integrators. That’s a key insight as RIX explores the market.

Q: How does customer input shape your work?

A: Honestly, one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as a business development professional is to listen more than I speak. Coming from a technical background, I used to jump in with solutions. Now I let customers talk through their challenges, ask open questions, and take those needs back to our engineering teams. You learn more by listening, and many times, customers end up defining the solution themselves.

Q: Are there any engineering challenges you’re working closely on?

A: Hydrogen sealing is a big one and remains tough industry wide. Our compressors can theoretically reach pressures above 350 bar, but seal degradation becomes a major issue above 200 bar. We’re collaborating with engineering to develop higher-pressure capabilities, and when we solve it, we’ll open the door to more heavy-duty hydrogen applications.

Q:How do you hope your role evolves as RIX grows into new markets?

A: I’d like to play a meaningful part in expanding RIX’s role in clean energy. I’m a believer that we need to decrease our dependence on fossil fuels, but I also recognize it won’t be one perfect solution. Hydrogen, renewable natural gas, and other technologies will need to work together. I’d like to help build that future within RIX, ideally through a more defined clean energy segment over time.

Doug Richmond's journey at RIX Industries is marked by a unique blend of engineering expertise and customer insight. Over his 15 years with the company, Doug has become an expert at bridging technical complexity with practical solutions, particularly across RIX’s medical and industrial markets. In this Q&A, Doug reflects on his path to RIX, the “lost art” of custom system sizing, and the opportunities he sees as the company expands into new markets.

Q: How did you get your start, and what led you to RIX Industries?

A: My path to RIX is more straightforward than others on the team, but it definitely had its twists. Before I became an engineer, I sold cars to put myself through college; for a while, I stopped school because I was making so much money. But when the 2008 downturn hit, I suddenly wasn’t. That was my wake-up call to finish college and earn my engineering degree.

Initially, I thought I would design engines for Ford or another automotive company, but I soon realized that I wasn’t ready to pick up and leave California. A friend who worked at RIX told me about their reciprocating compressors. They reminded me of engines, only without combustion. It was the closest thing to the work I’d wanted to do while still being near family and friends. I joined the company as a design engineer and soon realized that pure engineering was not the right fit, but the technical sales role was. It gave me the best of both worlds.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your role?

A: I like the 'pre-engineering' phase most: the sizing, the staging, the pressure calculations, and the process of figuring out exactly what a customer needs before it ever reaches formal engineering. For example, when a hospital needed a custom oxygen system, I worked through multiple iterations to ensure the design met their specific requirements. It was like solving a complex puzzle.

I enjoy working directly with customers, answering their questions about rod loads, blowby, volumetric efficiency, ring life, and reliability tradeoffs, and I can usually provide answers on the spot. Customers don’t expect a salesperson to understand the technology this deeply, so when they realize I can walk them through the details, it builds confidence in our engineering team. I love that, and it’s great for business!

Q: What kinds of industrial applications are you involved in today?

A: Historically, RIX has been the go-to company for challenging applications, such as developing a custom compressor for a remote mining operation or creating a specialized system for a cutting-edge research facility. We have been the niche player when options run out. That reputation has led to projects in metal processing, wastewater treatment, and oxygen boosting for refining and extraction, along with a long list of one-off applications.

These varied applications have been eye-opening in terms of market needs. We are now exploring areas where standardization could make sense, such as improved oil recovery, where high-pressure and portable systems could be a good fit. We are also evaluating opportunities in cryogenic systems and high-pressure hydrogen compression, both of which could open doors into future industrial markets.

Q: What advancements in medical or industrial technology are you watching closely?

A: Hydrogen remains very interesting. The hype has cooled compared to a few years ago, but the technical need remains strong. High-pressure hydrogen compression is challenging because diaphragm compressors are expensive and difficult to maintain. If hydrogen could be reliably compressed to very high pressures with a reciprocating piston, it would have major impact.

We are also evaluating opportunities in landfill gas recovery, along with new oxygen and nitrogen storage technologies, to support our existing customers. On the medical side, the biggest breakthrough we are working on is affordability.

Q: What are customers asking for most these days, and how does that shape your priorities?

A: Customers have been clear for years. They love the reliability of our medical compressors, but the cost of units and spare parts limits our reach. At every trade show, the first thing I would hear was that our products perform incredibly well but are simply too expensive for many budgets.

That feedback has reached a tipping point. We are now well into establishing a lower-cost supply chain that could bring our pricing down. If we can reach the mid-tier market without sacrificing quality, we will unlock a significant amount of new opportunities while helping more hospitals gain access to reliable oxygen systems.

On the industrial side, customers want flexibility and speed. They need accurate sizing and fast responses. That is where our experience and long-term technical knowledge really add value.

Q: Talk about the “lost art” of custom sizing. What does that mean?

A: When I joined RIX in 2011, the sales and engineering teams had decades upon decades of compressor experience at a company that had already been around for more than a century. That depth is rare today. People change jobs frequently, making it difficult to accumulate the nuance necessary to size compressors accurately and quickly.

If you cannot size systems efficiently, custom business becomes almost impossible. Customers need answers in days, not weeks. They need budgets, timelines, and a clear sense of feasibility before a project can move forward. Long-term expertise makes that possible, and it is something I value about my role.

Q: Looking ahead, what do you see as the next big shift for your sector?

A: The biggest shift will be finding the middle ground between customization and cost by developing modular designs that offer flexibility and affordability, allowing us to tailor solutions without excessive expense. RIX has always excelled at one-off engineered solutions, and that will not change. We want to grow into new markets by pairing our capability with standardized, affordable products to better compete.

If we get the cost structure right and combine it with the expertise we already have, we open the door to markets that have previously been off-limits on both the medical and industrial sides. That is exciting, and where I see the most opportunity ahead.

RIX Industries Opens New Center of Excellence for Advanced Development Near Company Headquarters

Benicia-based site strengthens collaboration, accelerates product development, and supports long-term growth strategy

RIX Industries , a recognized leader in advanced gas compression, gas generation, and precision-engineered technologies, today announced the grand opening of its Otterson Center of Excellence for Advanced Development. Located in close proximity to the company’s Benicia headquarters, this new facility is nearly three times the size of the previous location, significantly expanding RIX’s innovation infrastructure and centralizing the company’s research, prototyping, and next-generation product development functions.

The move replaces the former development site, enabling closer collaboration among engineering teams and improving access to shared resources to accelerate the pace of progress. Here, RIX’s technical teams will focus on advancing core compression technologies, exploring next-generation control systems and electronic integration, evaluating new materials and components, and improving product longevity, efficiency, and maintainability. Designed primarily for prototyping, testing, and iterative engineering, the Center of Excellence will support strategic initiatives spanning industrial, defense, aerospace, energy, and adjacent markets.

At a ribbon-cutting celebration on November 7, attendees toured the new facility and met with members of RIX’s Advanced Development engineering team. Executive Chairman Bert Otterson, President and CEO Dana Otterson James, and Chief Technology Officer Anil Raina spoke about the company’s growth trajectory and investments in people and technology. Local and regional officials in attendance included representatives from the Benicia Chamber of Commerce, Benicia city leadership, and the offices of U.S. Congressman Garamendi and California State Senator Cabaldon.

RIX Industries Awarded U.S. DOT Small Business Innovation Research Contract for Advanced Commercial Vehicle Tire Management System

Phase 1 award funds development of WESATIS technology to enhance safety and efficiency for over 30 million U.S. commercial motor vehicles

RIX Industries , a recognized leader in advanced gas compression and generation technologies, today announced it has been awarded a $204,500 Small Business Innovation Research ( SBIR ) Phase I contract by the U.S. Department of Transportation 's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration ( FMCSA ). Under the six-month contract, RIX will analyze current technology, conceptualize system designs, evaluate designs for feasibility, and propose a plan to fabricate a prototype Weight Equalization Smart Automatic Tire Inflation System (WESATIS), addressing critical safety and efficiency challenges affecting over 30 million commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) operating in the United States.

WESATIS technology targets significant advancement over existing central tire inflation systems (CTIS) by incorporating dynamic load sensing and real-time pressure adjustment capabilities on a per-tire basis. Unlike conventional systems that maintain uniform pressure across all tires, WESATIS will automatically detect load distribution imbalances and adjust individual tire pressures while the vehicle is in motion, optimizing tire performance, extending tire life, improving fuel efficiency, and enhancing overall vehicle safety.

"Despite significant safety and efficiency implications, commercial motor vehicle tire pressure management has remained largely unchanged for decades," said Matthew Ellington, Principal Investigator and Systems Development Manager at RIX Industries. "Our WESATIS approach combines proven gas compression technology with advanced sensing capabilities to create a dynamic solution that addresses real-world load distribution challenges that drivers face every day."

Current CMV tire management presents substantial challenges for fleet operators and drivers. Research shows that tires carrying unequal loads (even when inflated to the same pressure) can experience dramatically different performance characteristics. A tire under-inflated by just 20% can reduce tire life by up to 30%, while temperature variations from -40°F to +140°F cause pressure fluctuations that drivers cannot effectively manage manually. These factors contribute to reduced stopping power, decreased maneuverability, increased crash risk, and diminished fuel efficiency.

The WESATIS solution builds upon RIX Industries' extensive expertise in gas compression, leveraging the company's military-qualified compressor technology that has successfully completed MIL-STD-1275, MIL-STD-461, and MIL-STD-810 testing. This proven foundation exceeds the performance standards required for on-road conditions, readily providing the durability and reliability necessary for demanding commercial vehicle applications.

RIX’s Phase I effort will focus on establishing design requirements, conducting comprehensive trade studies of sensor technologies, and determining the feasibility of the number of WESATIS systems required for multiple trailers or those without WESATIS connection points. The company will evaluate multiple technical challenges, including advanced sensor integration, wireless communication systems, and modular architecture designed to accommodate various CMV configurations from single-unit trucks to complex tractor-trailer combinations.

Upon successful completion of Phase I, RIX anticipates pursuing a Phase II award to build and test a full WESATIS prototype on commercial vehicles, with the end goal of bringing this safety-enhancing technology to market for widespread fleet adoption.

Under the agreement, SHI will serve as a key partner in expanding access to RIX Industries’ high-performance compressors and gas generators, delivering tailored solutions for a wide range of vessel types and offshore applications. This special arrangement is the first of its kind between a compressor and gas generator OEM and a ship repair firm, aiming to dramatically increase technician response speed for improved readiness of the U.S. Navy’s Seventh Fleet.

Partnership explores thermoacoustic cryocooler technology for the ngVLA, aiming to reduce power consumption and enhance sensitivity in large-scale radio astronomy.

RIX Industries has partnered with the U.S. National Science Foundation’s National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NSF NRAO) to advance cryogenic cooling solutions for the Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA). This collaboration focuses on adapting RIX’s Thermoacoustic Stirling-cycle Cryocooler (TASC) technology to meet the ngVLA’s demanding thermal requirements — delivering 4 W at 20 K and 15 W at 80 K with less than 2,700 W of input power. The technology promises reduced maintenance, enhanced reliability, and up to 50% lower energy consumption compared to legacy Gifford-McMahon systems, supporting the ngVLA’s goal of enabling ultra-sensitive astronomical observations with improved operational efficiency.

Marty Ellner has spent his career on the leading edge of aerospace innovation, from his early days in weapons ejection systems to his current role in boosting RIX’s defense sector growth. In this Q&A, Marty shares what drives him, how RIX helps modernize defense platforms, and the trends that are shaping the future of pneumatic technology.

Q: How did you find your way to RIX Industries?

A: I first worked with RIX back when I was at EDO Corporation, a leader in defense known for suspension and release equipment—bomb racks and missile launchers. We were working on replacing pyrotechnic cartridges with high-pressure air for cleaner, more efficient ejection systems. EDO needed a small aerospace-compatible compressor, and I remembered RIX from a prior project involving compressed natural gas. That’s how the relationship started. Years later, after working with RIX as a customer for many years, I happened to see a RIX job posting that described my background perfectly, and I thought, “This is meant to be.” And here I am.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your role?

A: For me, it’s the thrill of finding new opportunities, talking to people about their needs, and realizing that we may already have a solution. I check government solicitations daily, keep up with industry articles, and review old inquiries to see if we now offer a solution that might be a fit today. Just recently, I followed up with someone I knew could likely benefit from one of our new products. That kind of moment energizes me.

Q: What makes your approach to business development unique?

A: I’m not a traditional salesperson. I think I’d be terrible at selling trinkets. What I do is educate. I explain how we can fulfill a requirement, and I connect the dots between a customer’s need and the capabilities we’ve developed. I’ve built relationships over decades in this very small, niche field, and that trust really matters. I’ll even point people to other suppliers if we’re not the right fit. It’s about helping, not just selling.

Q: How is the industry evolving when it comes to ejection systems?

A: Pyrotechnic bomb racks are still used on legacy aircraft like the F-16 and F-15, and that won’t change anytime soon. But new platforms—like the F-35 and P-8A—are using pneumatic systems. Pneumatics offer big advantages: no debris, less maintenance, and no need to track and dispose of explosive cartridges. On the P-8A, for example, there are multiple RIX compressors supporting both weapons ejection and sonobuoy deployment. It’s a cleaner, smarter solution, and that’s where the future is headed.

Q: Are you seeing any major trends or changes in defense programs?

A: Currently, the largest trend in the defense area is the use of unmanned technology. All services are looking at incorporating unmanned platforms, whether it be ground, sea or air platforms. In the air warfare segment, the USAF is looking at incorporating unmanned “loyal wingmen” with manned 5 ^th and 6 ^th generation fighters. The concept is to have a single manned fighter take off with multiple unmanned aircraft, giving the manned fighter additional mission capability.

The unmanned aircraft provide additional capability at a fraction of the cost of manned platforms. Whether the aircraft is manned or unmanned, most will require the ability to deploy weapons, sensors or swarms of small UAVs. To do this safely, the aircraft will require pneumatic-assisted ejection or deployment. There is also research being conducted exploring the use of active flow control to enhance aircraft aerodynamics and maneuverability. Compressors can be required to generate the air that will be used to enhance aircraft aerodynamics and performance.

Q: What's been your most memorable moment at RIX so far?

A: I had the opportunity to visit Eglin Air Force Base and get a close-up look at the F-35. I even got to stick my head inside the weapons bay. That was definitely a “cool factor” moment, seeing one of the most advanced aircraft in the world up close. It was especially meaningful given that the F-35 has a pneumatic ejection system that I was able to see and envision how RIX could provide a similar high-pressure compressor for the aircraft or other aircraft.

Q: What do you want people to know about your work or your mindset at RIX?

A: I genuinely like to help people. That applies to customers, colleagues, anyone really. Sometimes people come to me knowing we don’t have exactly what they need, and I’ll still try to point them in the right direction. For customers trying to find a solution, RIX can design custom solutions based on their specific requirements. We’ve been doing this a long time and customization is something we’re particularly good at. I like to tell potential customers that it’s best to get RIX involved during the concept design phase. Understanding the application and usage can really help us zero in the optimal solution. Working closely with customers in the early stages helps us to become partners, not just a supplier or vendor.

RIX Liquid Oxygen Generation Plant Supports US Navy’s Newest Aircraft Carriers

RIX Industries supplies mission-critical gas separation and cryocooler technology for pilot and medical applications onboard the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78)

Background:

Aircraft carriers use highly concentrated gaseous and liquid oxygen for aviation and medical applications. These legacy systems consume large amounts of valuable ship space and require constant attention and adjustment to meet purity and production rates. With the development of USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) – the “first-in-class” nuclear-powered aircraft carrier designed to replace the aging Nimitz-class carriers in service for over 50 years – the Navy and its contracted partners determined an opportunity for improvement. By implementing a modern liquid oxygen plant in the new Ford-class fleet design, the Navy could achieve its key goals of reducing cost of ownership, decreasing operational manpower, and significantly reducing overall maintenance demands.

Early in the vessel’s development process, the Navy, in conjunction with Huntington Ingalls and Northrop Grumman, recognized that traditional liquid oxygen-generating systems were very difficult to operate, required routine maintenance, and consumed large amounts of energy. Many legacy production plants utilize fractional distillation column technology to produce high-purity oxygen and turbo Brayton cryogenic plants for liquefaction. In addition, each plant typically takes twenty or more hours to reach stability, an unacceptable amount of time for the Navy to reach operational readiness.

The RIX Solution:

To meet the need for improvement, RIX Industries, in partnership with Chart Industries/Qdrive, developed a state-of-the-art Liquid Oxygen, or LOX, plant utilizing a large Thermoacoustic Stirling Cryocooler (TASC) and a militarized Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption (VPSA) oxygen generator. Together, these sophisticated technologies promise benefits in safety, performance, and reliability. The system operates at 50psi, liquefies oxygen at approximately 100K, and operates autonomously to start liquefying LOX in under 20 minutes.

The TASC consists of three (3) coldheads that have absolutely no moving parts. The compressor, or Pressure Wave Generator (PWG), utilizes two 10kW linear reciprocating motors opposed to each other, cancelling vibration and reducing noise, another significant advantage for Naval installations. The motors feature flexure bearings that do not require lubrication and the pistons utilize non-contact clearance seals that eliminate wear, creating an efficient, maintenance-free design. In addition, the size/weight of the RIX cryocooler is approximately 50% the size of its predecessor and the TASC is impervious to ship movement.

“I’ve not experienced a better example of teamwork during the development of this system,” says Jerry Stultz, former director of DOD/Navy Programs and current Chief Operations Officer at RIX. “We dramatically reduced the size and weight of the plant while satisfying the ship’s production and crew member reduction requirements. It’s truly satisfying to participate in building an increasingly bright future for the US Navy’s aircraft carrier fleet.”

Rigorous Testing:

All Navy-approved shipboard equipment must pass a series of rigorous tests that prove the equipment is suitable for extreme use in mission-critical scenarios. Testing criteria encompasses extensive shock, noise, and vibration tests, as well as power quality analysis to ensure signals generated by the equipment do not interfere with other critical shipboard systems. During a particular Naval shock test, (MIL-S-901D) the complete RIX system was subjected to multiple shock episodes, with the highest test imparting an impressive 80-Gs of acceleration directly on the cryocooler. Although it was not required to operate after this test, the TASC not only survived with very little damage, it was able to reach cryogenic temperatures in 10 minutes and LOX liquefaction temperatures in 20 minutes. The RIX system also passed the Navy’s extreme Builders and Acceptance trials performed at sea.

Conclusion:

Historically, startup and operation of legacy liquid oxygen production plants deployed on Navy aircraft carriers and hospital ships required highly trained personnel. Today, RIX Industries provides a fully autonomous system that starts at the push of a button and produces liquid oxygen in 20 minutes. The RIX liquid and gaseous oxygen production plant also uses maintenance-free cryogenic cooling technology and provides an intuitive user interface that communicates with other shipboard machinery systems. The RIX LOX plant’s rugged, reliable design and extraordinary test results have validated its performance during mission-critical scenarios and in harsh environments. In fact, the USS Gerald R. Ford recently returned from an 8-month mission in the Mediterranean Sea after successfully conducting operations in the U.S. Sixth Fleet. RIX is proud and honored to be part of that CVN-78 mission and future CVN missions.

Mike McNulty brings a service-first mindset and decades of technical experience to RIX Industries. In this Q&A, Mike reflects on the U.S. Navy's evolving readiness goals, RIX’s mission, and the personal values that guide his work.

Q: How would you describe the Navy’s current readiness goals?

A: Naval readiness is more urgent and complex than ever. With just 296 ships in the fleet, the U.S. Navy has set a goal for 75 of those vessels to be deployment-ready within 72 hours. That’s a significant shift from past expectations. Global tensions—across the Pacific Rim, Red Sea, Mediterranean, and Ukraine—mean the Navy must maintain an active presence in multiple theaters. Meeting that demand is a huge challenge, and readiness has never mattered more.

Q: What role does RIX play in supporting Navy readiness?

A: At RIX, we sell readiness. That’s what I tell our Navy clients. We provide compressors for new ships, but we also maintain over 600 units that are already out in the fleet. While the Navy does a lot of its own maintenance, when something goes wrong, they rely on us to get it fixed. My directive to the team is simple: RIX should never be the reason a ship can’t leave the pier. That mindset drives everything we do.

Q: How do you respond when schedules change suddenly?

A: The key is flexibility and speed. Most of the time, we know a couple of months ahead which ship we’ll be working on and what the job entails. But that can all change if the Navy has to reallocate ships to meet readiness goals. When that happens, we have to be ready to go at a moment’s notice. That means having material on hand, technicians trained and positioned, and a system that can pivot on a dime.

Q: How did you become so service-oriented?

A: I’ve been in service my whole life. When I was 11, I got a paper route. Before my first delivery, my dad had me write a letter to my customers explaining how I would deliver the paper on time and take care of them. It was a lesson that gave me what I like to call a ‘service heart’ and it has stuck with me ever since. It means putting the customer first—doing whatever it takes to make sure they are happy and have what they need to succeed. That’s the kind of attitude I look for when I hire. Not everyone has it, but when you find someone who does, you know they’ll go the distance.

Q: Why do you prioritize hiring veterans?

A: Half of our technicians are Navy vets. They already understand ships, compressors, chain of command...they speak the Navy’s language. Plus, they have that service mindset. I grew up in a Coast Guard family, so I have deep respect for what military folks do. We even added a veteran symbol to their business cards as a reflection of their service and dedication. When a naval engineer sees that, it builds immediate trust and starts conversations that strengthen relationships.

Q: How has the customer support program evolved since you joined RIX?

A: When I came on board at RIX, customer support was called 'aftermarket support,' which didn’t really reflect the depth of what we do. We changed the nomenclature and, with it, the mindset. We added rentals, analytics, and reliability consulting. We’re helping clients plan maintenance better and respond faster when something breaks. It’s not about selling parts, it’s about keeping ships mission-ready. That’s the standard to which we hold ourselves.

Q: Can you share a story that captures your commitment to service?

A: I have so many! But one that stands out happened in 1994. I was finishing a shipboard job in Hawaii when I got a call. There was a submarine in Connecticut that was in dire need of an emergency compressor repair. I flew across the country that night, worked 26 hours straight, and got the machine up and running just before deployment. When I walked off the ship, the captain and crew were waiting for me. They rang me off like I was the commanding officer, an incredible expression of appreciation. That moment reminded me why this work matters so much.

Q: What’s next for customer support at RIX?

A: We’ve certainly come a long way but we’re always working to improve—faster logistics, better training, more proactive service. We’re evolving all the time. The mission is simple: make sure the warfighter has what they need, when they need it. If we stay focused on that, everything else takes care of itself.

RIX Industries’ long-standing partnership with the U.S. Navy goes back over half a century. The Navy has been—and continues to be—the primary purchaser of RIX compressors within the U.S. Department of Defense. The proven ROTEC series of compressors is optimized for aviation performance – keeping the BRU/LAU charged at the proper pressure during the flight envelope and withstanding extreme temperature changes during flight, critical for safe separation. RIX’s ROTEC systems also enable the BRU to immediately recharge after weapon release, ensuring all systems are quickly and safely ready to execute following ejections.

According to PATH (a non-profit focused on health equity), as of October 20, 2022, the daily medical oxygen needed for COVID-19 treatment for all low and middle-income countries was 3,800,000 cubic meters. Hospitals without cylinder solutions for backup and peak usage had run out of oxygen,

contributing to avoidable deaths.

By integrating technology licensed from Element 1 (dba e1), the RIX M2H2 Series systems produce hydrogen-on-demand, eliminating the complexities of on-board high-pressure gas or cryogenic liquid hydrogen storage. Onboard methanol-to-hydrogen generation fuels flexibility in ship architecture

Tapping into hydrogen as a fuel source is changing the decarbonization game in shipping. And now, with methanol-to-hydrogen technology a reality , ship designers are empowered with creative ways to implement this safe and viable option within vessels already at sea and those still on the drawing board.

This new method of producing hydrogen offers greater flexibility to existing ships by repurposing tanks already in use. It also gives naval architects freedom to design new ships with best-fit propulsion systems , finding value and purpose in previously unused shipboard areas. Methanol-to-hydrogen solutions distributed across vessel infrastructure minimize retrofit and enable best-fit strategies to take advantage of unused space

Benicia, CALIF – March 23, 2022 – RIX Industries , a leading developer of energy technologies and industrial power systems, today highlighted the many advantages of hydrogen-on-demand for naval architects . Enabled by methanol-to-hydrogen generation technology, ship propulsion systems can meet looming emissions mandates while reducing design complexities centered on the need for shipboard hydrogen storage. In this type of design, hydrogen is not stored but rather created as needed through a safe and efficient reforming process, allowing the methanol-to-hydrogen propulsion strategy to be distributed across a vessel’s infrastructure.

“Understanding the options for clean, green propulsion may only be the starting point in the goal of reduced emissions. It is a challenge compounded by the potential for long-term impact on ship architecture,” said Bryan Reid, Chief Sales Officer, RIX Industries. “While hydrogen is an appealing answer industry-wide, its deployment is deeply complicated by cryogenic temperature requirements and/or high-volume, high-pressure storage. However, the ability to generate hydrogen on-demand is breaking through these barriers, tapping into safe, convenient methanol to eliminate complexity and achieve decarbonization.”

For existing vessels, no major retrofit of ship infrastructure is necessary to deploy hydrogen-on-demand. With proper cleaning, tanks currently used for diesel storage can instead store liquid methanol at ambient temperatures. Cryogenics and high-pressure storage are not required.

With high-pressure capabilities no longer necessary, tank size and shape can be more flexible in nature. For new vessels, this characteristic enables naval architects to design creatively shaped tanks for best fit. By redefining the footprint required for propulsion systems, premium deck space or cargo volume that might have previously been unavailable is freed up. Methanol tanks can be incorporated within any unique void in a ship’s structure – custom-fit to make use of otherwise unusable space. Instead of a traditional engine room, new ship designs may include a reformer area featuring a primary methanol-to-hydrogen system. Capacity can then be extended by capitalizing on small spaces across the ship for additional reformers and methanol tanks.

Methanol-to-hydrogen conversion occurs within a self-contained system, such as the RIX M2H2-Series, creating a steady stream of high-purity hydrogen when and where needed. Systems are modular, scalable, and commercially available – and when combined with PEM fuel cells can support power needs ranging from 10kW to MW applications. At the same time, systems ensure high energy efficiency (>80%) and meet reduced space and weight requirements, operating in contrast to pure hydrogen storage’s heavy footprint. Most importantly, they produce high-purity hydrogen with no NOx, no SOx, and no particulate matter (PM). When renewable methanol becomes available, they can reform it and readily achieve Net Zero CO2 emissions.

DLA will purchase spare liquefier modules for its existing RIX shipboard-qualified liquid oxygen production systems for US Navy aircraft carriers

Benicia, CALIF – December 15, 2021 – RIX Industries , a leading developer of energy technologies and industrial power systems, today announced a $1.6M contract award by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), the nation’s combat logistics support body within the US Department of Defense (DoD). The contract stipulates the purchase of spare RIX liquefier modules for the US Navy’s existing shipboard-qualified liquid oxygen (LOX) production systems, also from RIX. These LOX units, currently deployed onboard USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) and USS John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), and planned for future USS Gerald Ford Class aircraft carriers, USS Enterprise (CVN 80), and USS Doris Miller (CVN 81), leverage thermoacoustic Stirling pulse tube liquefier module technology to produce liquid oxygen for aviation personnel and shipboard medical use.

RIX Industries to Provide Low Pressure Air Plants for US Navy’s Ford and Nimitz Carriers

RIX Industries has secured contracts to deliver low pressure air plants for the U.S. Navy’s nuclear-powered Ford and Nimitz-class aircraft carriers.

Valued at more than $12MUSD, these contracts were awarded by the Naval Surface Warfare Center in order to support the new construction of Ford-class carriers and Navy Refueling and Complex Overhauls (RCOH) of CVN-73 in 2018 and CVN-74 in 2020. The scope of the award to RIX Industries includes orders for up to 20 MARC-350A units.

Work on the project is being carried out at RIX Industries facilities in Benicia, California, space that supports the DOD division within the Navy/GSE segment. “Our innovative products and reliable solutions support the U.S. Navy’s cost and delivery targets, while reinforcing the fleet readiness commitments for both platforms,” says Stultz. RIX Industries has already begun various engineering and manufacturing contracts that will continue through 2025.

RIX Industries previously received orders with a combined value of more than $80MUSD to supply the world’s most advanced high-pressure compressors for Virginia-class submarines and Ford-class carriers .

In the spirit of giving, RIX Industries has successfully raised $630 for Prostate Cancer Awareness. All month, RIX Industries participated in No Shave November to raise money toward the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation . With much success, RIX Industries surpassed their goal of $500 and raised a total of $630 in donation money. On November 30th, the no-shave participants endured a panel of RIX judges as their beards were judged on strict criteria including “Best Beard,” “Worst Beard” and “Best Baby Face.” The winners of each category received shaving kits and bragging rights for the remainder of the year.

The No Shave November campaign at RIX started with one employee who wanted to have some fun with colleagues while raising awareness about cancer. Since the initial idea spread around RIX Industries, over 20 male employees at RIX gave up their facial grooming practices for the month of November. These participants also generously donated the money they would normally spend on shaving equipment to this incredible cause. Along with these brave and hairy participants, many more RIX employees donated in support of cancer awareness, enabling RIX to surpass its donation goal.

“It feels really good to spread the word about prostate cancer and all cancers in general,” said one participant. “Who knows? My facial hair could prompt someone to go see their doctor. And hey, I may decide to keep my new facial hair once this is all over.”

According to the National Cancer Institute , cancer remains the second-leading cause of death in the United States, the first being heart disease. Prostate cancer, one of the most common types of cancers in the United States, makes up roughly 15% of all new cancer cases. According to the National Institute of Health , an estimated 29,000 people will die of prostate cancer this year alone, attributing to 5% of cancer-caused deaths in 2016.

RIX Industries’ Liquid Oxygen (LOX) Production System receives much praise in the latest edition of the Cryogenics Society of America’s online magazine, “ Cold Facts. ” Published in the 3rd quarter of 2016, the magazine’s section, Spotlight on Industry, has highlighted the RIX LOX system for cutting cost and increasing efficiency for the U.S. Navy.

Onboard the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), the RIX LOX Production System provides benefits in safety, performance, and reliability in the production of liquid oxygen for both medical and pilot uses aboard the carrier. Developed by RIX Industries in partnership with Chart Inc., the LOX Production System features energy-efficient Thermoacoustic Stirling Technology (TST) by Chart Inc. and new militarized VSPA separators by RIX Industries. As a result, the system operates at 50 psig pressure and liquefy at approximately 105 K; thusly successfully causing a major reductions in the lifecycle cost to the U.S. Navy.

RIX Industries Donates 2PS-H Compressor to Non-Profit Hospital in Peru

RIX Industries is proud to announce its most recent donation of a 2PS-H compressor to Diospi Suyana , a non-profit mission hospital in Peru. Since 2007, the hospital has treated over 200,000 patients with quality care. Due to the influx of patients and increased capacity at the hospital, RIX has supplied the hospital with a 2PS-H Oxygen Booster . This RIX Oxygen Booster is specifically designed to help handle this increase in current demand on the existing hospital system.

The Diospi Suyana mission hospital is made possible by a devoted staff of an international group of doctors and nurses led by Drs. Klaus-Dieter and Martina John. The 2PS-H high pressure oxygen compressor is engineered specifically for safe and reliable gas compression of oxygen and other clean, dry gases. General Dynamics Bath Iron Works Selects RIX STAR Compressor for USCG Offshore Patrol Cutters

BENICIA, Feb 9, 2016 – RIX Industries , headquartered in Benicia, California, was recently selected to provide state-of-the-art, oil-free STAR Series design compressors for General Dynamics, Bath Iron Works to support United States Coast Guard (USCG) Offshore Patrol Cutters.

The Coast Guard is using a two-phased design-build strategy to acquire the Offshore Patrol Cutters (OPC). This approach established stable requirements and design early in the acquisition to help mitigate cost and schedule risks. The Coast Guard awarded preliminary design awards to three vendors – Bollinger Shipyards Lockport LLC; Eastern Shipbuilding Group Inc.; and General Dynamics, Bath Iron Works – in February 2014. After evaluating an extensive range of contract deliverables submitted by each of the preliminary and contract design phase contractors, the service will select one vendor to complete the second phase, which includes detail design and options for construction of up to nine OPCs. This approach further promotes affordability by allowing the Coast Guard to review how nine cutters are priced in a competitive environment before the down-select decision to a single contractor is made. Twenty-five OPCs are planned.

MVAT Foundation Welcomes MOH Recipient to May Fundraiser

[Napa, CA] – The MVAT Foundation is pleased to announce that Medal of Honor (MOH) recipient, Major General Patrick Brady , USA (ret.), will attend MVAT’s 4th Annual Dinner in the Vines Fundraiser. Major General Patrick Brady is a Medal of Honor recipient and peer of Colonel Jack Jacobs (also a Medal of Honor recipient). Jack Jacobs attended last year’s MVAT Foundation Fundraiser as an open supporter of the MVAT Foundation. This year Major General Patrick Brady is expected to deliver poignant remarks about his service in the US Army and the good deeds the MVAT Foundation provides to veterans at the Fundraiser event.

While serving as a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War, Patrick Brady received the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration for valor. “MVAT is pleased to have a distinguished American such as Major General Pat Brady speaking at our Sonoma Event,” says George Wood, Board Member of the MVAT Foundation. “General Brady has done more for Veterans then most people I can think of. His 2,500 missions of helicopter piloting into combat to bring wounded soldier to safety is indicative of the kind of human being the General is.”

The Pathway Home and 15 Other Charities Supporting Veterans Receive MVAT Grants

The MVAT Foundation recently provided grants to 16 of the best performing nonprofit charities and organizations supporting veterans around the nation, one of which was The Pathway Home , a Bay Area nonprofit dedicated to benefiting the lives of veterans. MVAT Beneficiaries Committee Members spent much time deliberating and analyzing grant recipients. The Committee rated grant recipient organizations on criteria such as organizational financial health, program efficiencies and outcomes, and good governance practices. Emphasis was also placed on smaller charities like The Pathway Home and specific programs where the MVAT Beneficiaries Committee believed the grant funds would make a material difference in helping that organization’s ability to continue to carry out impactful, service-based programs.

The Pathway Home contribution is one of the few grants specifically generated from the Northern California Council of the MVAT Foundation. RIX Industries , a high-pressure, oil-free air and gas compressor company located in Benicia, CA, was the single biggest contributor to the MVAT Foundation Northern California Council’s 2015 fundraising efforts. The Pathway Home, which is run out of the Napa Veterans Home -one of the largest in the nation-, is deeply committed to Veterans of the Afghan and Iraq conflicts. Due to a lack of funding, The Pathway Home recently emerged from having to close its doors to veterans for good. But by partnering with the Veterans Administration and the Napa Veterans Home, The Pathway Home will continue to serve struggling Veterans. “As war became more and more distant in people’s minds, so did the contributions to The Pathway Homes” says George Wood, Executive Vice President of RIX Industries. “The Pathway Home recently emerged from near extinction, therefore saving veterans by saving itself. It is an honor for the MVAT Foundation and RIX Industries to support this charity’s positive impact within the community.”

RIX to Host Oxygen Standardization Coordinating Group (OSCG) 2016 Conferences

RIX Industries will be hosting the Oxygen Standardization Coordinating Group (OSCG) conferences at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, Nevada August 9th – 11th 2016. An annual assembly for all branches of the U.S. and international Military forces to collaborate and share ideas, the OSCG also offers a place for leaders in the oxygen solutions industry to share knowledge, network with government affiliates, and learn about developments pertaining to medical and aviation oxygen needs.

This will be the second time RIX will be hosting the event in Reno since 2009. During the 2015 OSCG conference held in San Antonio, Texas, RIX Industries leaders gave a presentation on their state of the art liquid oxygen plant to be used on aircraft carriers and currently aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78).

baby girl named Isla, Mallory is also one of the fortunate few who was able to welcome her husband, Petty Officer 2nd Class Samuel Kelton, home from the Coast Guard for the holidays. I had the privilege of interviewing Mallory about her husband’s service to our country as well as her family’s new holiday traditions with Isla.

How long has your husband been in the Coast Guard?

My husband, Sam, has been in the Coast Guard 8 years. His rank is BM2, which means he is a small boat tactical coxswain on a National Security Cutter. Basically he goes out and serves missions off the large cutter, usually for drug smuggling and search and rescue (SARS) cases.

What was one of Sam’s longest patrols?

We have dealt with his schedule the entire time we have been together, 2 years. I knew what I was getting into when we fell in love. The furthest mission [Sam] was on had to be during his patrol on the Arctic Ocean, Tahiti, and South America – each patrol was 4 months long.

What helps you cope with the time you spend apart from Sam?

We email daily, and I spend a lot of time with my family. They help me take care of Isla, our new baby girl, as I am essentially a single parent when is away. I love all that my husband does for our country, and how proudly he serves. The Coast Guard is his calling, protecting and saving lives, his true passion. Despite the sacrifices and time apart we face, we do it for our country. Semper Paratus.

How have you prepared to welcome Sam home for the holidays?

I usually ask what he wants as far as food for his first dinner back, and we stay at home for a while. This year will be our first Christmas together ever! I am so excited to spend it with Sam and Isla. It’s such a magical time, and because it is Isla’s first Christmas, we are establishing traditions for her to take part in with the family.

RIX Honors The Legacy of Medal of Honor Recipient, Tibor Rubin

Today RIX Industries honors the legacy of Medal of Honor Recipient and American Hero, Tibor Rubin , who passed away at age 86 on December 5, 2015. Although preserving the stories and legacies of our war heroes is no small feat, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society has continued to uphold the Medal of Honor’s legacy by honoring the courage, sacrifice, patriotism, and integrity of Tibor Rubin.

After losing his parents and two sisters in the Holocaust, Rubin was liberated from concentration camps and immigrated to America in 1948. Rubin joined the US Army in 1950. During his service to the US Military, Corporal Tibor Rubin performed many heroic acts for his fellow soldier in the name of freedom. While in the Army, he assisted with the successful withdrawal of his unit against a superior enemy force, remarkably defending a hill for over 24 hours single-handedly. From 1950 to 1953, Rubin assisted fellow injured POWs survive while imprisoned in Korea . After a review of the military records of Jewish-American veterans whose heroism might have been overlooked, Corporal Tibor Rubin was awarded the Medal of Honor by President George W. Bush on September 23, 2005.

“Tibor was a very sweet man, who I had the honor knowing through the MVAT Foundation ,” says George Wood, MVAT Board Member and Executive Vice President of RIX Industries . “People should know Tibor’s story of inspirational valor, especially during the holidays – a time to give thanks and celebrate family, tradition, and our nation’s heroes. Not many survivors of the Holocaust can say that they went on to become a US Soldier, but only [Tibor] can claim he did it and received the Medal of Honor for Valor for his heroic service in Korea. I will forever be grateful for knowing him. On behalf of the MVAT Foundation and RIX Industries, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.”

USS Gerald R Ford Equipped with Chart Qdrive Cryocooler and RIX Industries Compressor Technology

The first aircraft carrier in the Ford-Class (CVN-78) is in the final stages of construction and testing and scheduled to join the U.S. Navy fleet in 2016. On board, the USS Gerald R. Ford’s liquid oxygen generating plant, developed by innovator in compressor and pneumatic technologies, RIX Industries, incorporates Chart’s state of the art Qdrive® Acoustic-Stirling Liquefier that will decrease ownership cost by reducing operational manpower and virtually eliminate maintenance, while delivering additional benefits in safety, life-cycle, performance, and control.

Led by RIX Industries and charged by the US Navy and Huntington Ingalls , Chart was part of the industry team that developed a next-generation system to succeed the oversized, energy-hungry distillation columns installed on all current US Navy nuclear powered carriers. As well as delivering on energy savings, the new system produces liquid oxygen 20 minutes from start-up, improving upon almost 24 hours with conventional technology, and is impervious to rolls and lists, which means uninterrupted supply. In addition, the size and weight of the plant is approximately 50% of its predecessor, helping the Navy attain their overall reduction goals.

Family Ties Celebrated With RIX Industries Compressors Welcomed Aboard USS Rafael Peralta

BATH, Main – RIX Industries celebrates as three STAR-200D Series Compressors make a permanent home aboard the USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115) . Officially christened at the Bath Iron Works shipyard , the USS Rafael Peralta warship was ceremoniously launched into the Kennebec River, a moment that also celebrated family ties between one RIX Industries employee and personnel aboard the ship. Terry R. Allvord USN (Ret.), the Director of Business Development at RIX Industries helped to supply the STAR compressors that are now aboard the USS Rafael Peralta, a ship that Terry Allvord’s son, LTJG Chase Allvord, will be serving on.

Terry Allvord and LTJG Chase Allvord discussed their pride of working together as well as their continued commitment to military service. “Service is what led me to a Navy career and eventually to work at RIX Industries. Today, the compressor products we make at RIX support our armed forces, which include my two sons serving in the U.S. Navy,” says Terry R. Allvord, USN (Ret.) Director of Business Development at RIX Industries. “It’s an honor to find an employer and industry that allows me to continue to make a difference for my family and other relatives serving in the armed forces because in the end, that’s what it’s all about.”

During the warship’s float-off tradition, the three STAR-200D series compressors aboard the ship will be run for military shipboard applications. These compressors are uniquely engineered for shipboard use with a design that is light weight and single screw with high shock and vibration military specifications reducing airborne and structural noise levels. With advanced microprocessor control and water used as the circulating lubricant and coolant, the compressors deliver compressed air that is completely free of oil contamination, thusly eliminating costly and troublesome air cleanup systems. Long life corrosion resistant components are also in place to support fleet use in a highly corrosive saltwater environment.

Earlier this week, Producers George Case III and Jim Vankoski announced that their film Ballfield to Battlefield and Back – From FDR to JFK has been selected for celebration during a showing at the Tenth Annual Baseball Film Festival to be held at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, NY from September 25-27, 2015. As a salute to U.S. Military allstar baseball history, the film features rare color footage of WW II and Korean War-era major league players from 1939 through 1962.

The film, a national treasure, is introduced by Navy Lieutenant Commander and Director of Business Development at RIX Industries, Terry Allvord, who was one of the few honorees selected by President George H.W. Bush to reestablish baseball in the modern era as the founder of the U.S. Military All-Stars Red, White and Blue Tour.

“There’s no doubt that baseball is America’s game. Saluting our military by incorporating the two historic traditions of baseball and film is patriotic. Ballfield to Battlefield and Back – From FDR to JFK does an exemplary job at this,” says Terry.

RIX Industries Delivers Ten Hydrogen Compressors for Environmentally Friendly Applications

Dedicated to innovation and environmentally friendly technology, RIX Industries has engineered ten industrial hydrogen compressors . These compressors feature heavy-duty crosshead construction in a vertical cylinder arrangement with totally oil-free compression up to 6000 PSIG. With up to five stages of oil-free compression, these compressors will be used for storing high-pressure hydrogen, formulating renewable fuels, and re-hydrogenation of spent motor oil.

RIX Industries is a leader in oil-free, high-pressure compressor technology and applies its non-lubricated, state of the art designs to construct a variety of custom-made compressors. RIX compressors deliver oil-free hydrogen boosts that prevent oil carryover into the processed hydrogen, thus preventing contaminants from entering the final application of the gas.

Why Oil-Free?
When the compressor is used, hydrogen is taken from a liquid source and stored as a pure gas to prevent contaminants from entering the vehicle system and fouling the fuel cell. The compressor stores the hydrogen at high pressures at the filling station until it is needed.

These compressors are usually multi-stage units with large bearings, con rods, and crankshaft to handle the high rod loads that result from the high pressures. The valves are sized specially to handle the high flows in the relatively small cylinder heads. From beginning to end of the process, RIX compressors produce oil-free gaseous hydrogen in a controlled environment that prevents any oil carryover or contamination into the processed gas.

Renewable Fuels:
Refinery research facilities and renewable fuel production plants need high-pressure for their reformulations. The RIX frames are excellent choices for these applications , offering oil-free compression and the flexibility to provide high pressures with various inlet hydrogen pressures.

Mechanical Engineers at RIX Embrace #ILookLikeAnEngineer

If you haven’t heard, the Twitter campaign #ILookLikeAnEngineer has taken the internet by storm, and there’s no sign of it slowing down. Created by Isis Anchalee , a full-stack engineer at OneLogin , the hashtag promotes gender diversity in technology. Since Anchalee’s post went viral on Medium , her story and cause has gained increasing momentum and involvement on social media by engineers across multiple disciplines and industries.

Inspired by Anachalee’s story, two mechanical engineers at RIX Industries , Lesley and Tatiana, were happy to share what engineering means to them in this exclusive interview:

What inspired you to pursue engineering as a career?

Lesley: I liked math in school and I wanted to do something practical and hands on. I’ve always liked fixing things and problem solving so that is what keeps me having fun at work!

Tatiana: I think my earliest inspiration was my dad encouraging me (okay, maybe “letting” or “grudgingly permitting” is more accurate) to disassemble things in our house to my heart’s content, regardless of how many things I broke.

Tell us a little about your schooling to become an engineer.

Lesley: I attended Harvey Mudd College in southern California and majored in engineering. The engineering major at Harvey Mudd is a general engineering education, so we got exposure to various disciplines and did 3-4 specific courses and engineering clinic projects in the area that we chose to focus on. I chose fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and mechanical design related courses and clinic projects.

Tatiana: I majored my undergrad in mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. My love for Ann Arbor literally knows no end.

What do you love most about being an engineer at RIX Industries?

Lesley: My favorite part of being an engineer is the creative aspects of problem solving and designing. As an engineer at RIX, I get to be a part of the whole process, from concept design to build and test. This makes the whole process more fun and rewarding! I also appreciate being a part of RIX’s impressively long history of building air and nitrogen compressors.

Tatiana: RIX seemed to me like a great place that would encourage me to apply all of my engineering skills rather than a narrow subset. I absolutely love being able to watch a pile of parts and ideas come together to form a working machine!

What do you like to do outside of engineering?

Lesley: Hiking and camping on the weekends is my favorite. I also like to cook and get lots of exercise outside.

Tatiana: I like cycling, cult films, and trying new restaurants. I spend a lot of time contemplating how I can really become the best cat lady I can be, kidding. I don’t even have a cat… yet.

Customized Industrial Oxygen Compressor, Testing Completed

RIX Industries has successfully completed the final round of testing on a high-pressure, 4-stage oxygen compressor . Made for industrial uses, medical uses, and welding purposes, this 250 bar compressor will be able to fill approximately eight J oxygen cylinders an hour, making it one of the highest-flow cylinder-filling compressors on the market today.

This compressor, a customized 4VX model , features heavy-duty crosshead construction in a “V” cylinder arrangement with totally oil-free compression. Other models of this compressor are engineered with two to four-stages to boost the pressure up to storage levels. These models can withstand oil-free gas or air compression to 6000 psig with air or water cooling components. Tested to the highest level of safety and oxygen cleaning guidelines, 4VX oxygen compressors can be used in oxygen clean rooms and have VSA applications at steel mills, paper plants, and water treatment plans. High-pressure oxygen boosters like the one pictured are used for filling oxygen cylinders from oxygen PSA systems.

RIX Industries Visits the Naval Air Warfare Center to Promote Innovation

LAKEHURST, New Jersey, May 22 ^nd , 2015 – In an effort to promote future upgrades on MNGG nitrogen generators, leading engineers and business development directors from RIX Industries visited the U.S. Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC) in Lakehurst, NJ. Having delivering over 90 MNGG nitrogen generators to NAWC Lakehurst, RIX is involved with the development of a system upgrade to target enhanced performance and reliability.

“Our discussions with NAWC was centered on the progress of our modernization program, the approach for implementing the improvements, and ways that we can collaborate on future life cycle support.” says Jerry Stultz, Director of Navy and Ground Support Equipment at RIX Industries. “While we were there, we also visited NAWC’s ground support equipment repair facility. It was valuable to see the hard work NAWC has been doing to support the fielded MNGGs.”

In an effort to embrace innovation and learn about other military personnel and interconnected duties, the RIX Industries team also took the opportunity to visit the nearby Army helicopter facility where they were able to see some of the most pristine aircraft up close and personal.

The meetings proved useful for both parties, allowing RIX Industries to align developments and plan MNGG project innovations within the coming months.

RIX Receives Honorable Mention, b-Cubed Engineering Program

Benicia-based RIX Industries receives an honorable mention in a local news source publication for continued support of the b-Cubed engineering program at Benicia High School . Located in Benicia, CA the local education program is a joint effort among the school district, Benicia Education Foundation , and Benicia businesses – including RIX Industries – hence, the name b-Cubed .

Two of the five b-Cubed pilot projects are funded by RIX Industries; a robotics project at Benicia High School in which 14 robots were created, and a World History Class Cold War Simulation, which is a community-wide project that allows the students to recreate and experience real-life struggles during the Civil War.

RIX Industries Supports b-Cubed Grant Program at Local Benicia High School

BENICIA, Calif., March 9, 2015 – RIX Industries proudly supported Benicia High School’s b-Cubed program at a check presentation held at Benicia High School. b-Cubed is a pilot grant program in association with Benicia Unified School District, Benicia Education Foundation, and local Benicia businesses with a goal to increase awareness and participation for innovative K-12 projects in the classroom. Benicia School District members and Benicia High School faculty members attended the check presentation along with two Benicia High School alumni who are now employees at RIX Industries. Other RIX employees attended the event as well.

“It’s an extraordinary privilege and success to be involved with the b-Cubed and SeaPerch projects at Benicia High School, says Dana Otterson, Strategic Resource Coordinator at RIX Industries. “RIX is grateful to be in a position to support such motivated youth in our community. It’s quite the inspiration to everyone working here. We could not participate in such charitable donations without the hard work from our employees.”

Dana Otterson and the RIX team first connected with Adriene Rockwell and Benicia High School in 2014, providing funding for the school’s SeaPerch project, an engineering endeavor sponsored by SeaPerch Build , which allows students to construct their own underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) that function somewhat like submarines. Benicia High’s SeaPerch project was designed to create hands-on learning opportunities and generate enthusiasm around STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) careers.

This year, RIX Industries is exited to partner with Benicia High School and b-Cubed to impact the lives of students by participating in another grant for the program. RIX donated to Benicia High School’s Robots Invade Benicia High and World History Cold War Simulation projects. Dana Otterson and the rest of the RIX team happily report that they’ve already received a thank you card from participating Benicia High School students. Both project simulations are scheduled to take place at the high school in a few months.

The Oil-Free Phenomenon

In the air compression game, one major consideration of the compressor is the quality of the air that comes out (or nitrogen or hydrogen, or whatever gas you happen to be compressing). The major disadvantage with any oil-lubricated compressor is the contaminating presence of the oil itself. In certain quality grades, the standard for purification and air quality is quite high, and becomes incompatible with the contaminating presence of oil, even used as a lubricant.

This is why RIX specializes in oil-free compressors. While not a new technology (first introduced in the 1970s), the oil-free option remains the choice technology for much of the U.S. Military, scuba and firefighting applications, and other industrial markets. Not only does an oil-free compressor mean less air contamination (helpful especially when you’re breathing the compressed air, as with scuba and firefighting), but there is less maintenance necessary when no filters or other purification systems need to be in place after initial compression. This also has a positive effect on any downstream equipment, protecting against contamination of yet more machines by eliminating the need for an oil-based lubricant. Oil-free technology also has the advantage of being easier on the environment – oil-free means free of oil leaks and spills as well.

A Welcome Reminder of Our Mission

At RIX, we have the privilege to work on many different contracts for the United States Department of Defense – we have been involved in many different sectors of the DOD, most recently with the new aircraft carrier the USS Gerald Ford. We consider our work for the military a privilege, and are proud of the role we play in providing for our soldiers and sailors. Day to day on the job, however, it can be easy to overlook the significance of what we do. This is why it has been a wonderful reminder to have several local Congressmen come visit our plant, and reinforce the sense of value and pride in our work with the military.

RIX falls at an interesting crossroads between a local community and the federal government – we are a private company, and as such, a value to our community, but we also contract with the Military. This makes us not only an asset to our local area, but to our nation, and more immediately, to the troops that defend it. Not every business can say that their work aids the survivability of our soldiers on the ground and out at sea, and it was a welcome reminder to hear this assurance from our representatives in Congress.

Another great result of the visits were that we had the opportunity to show those who represent us in government how we help those who serve us in the military. The idea of military equipment and service becomes much more concrete when you’re down on the factory floor, getting a true window into the nuts and bolts of the systems that we manufacture, and how they impact the soldiers’ daily lives – we were glad to be able to provide that perspective that we often forget ourselves.

As we head into another year with this refreshing reminder of our perspective and place, we will continue to provide the highest quality work we can, to benefit our community, our Nation, and those who spend their days defending them.
